Wolf ColorPrint's history dates back to 1937 when George Wolf Sr. opened Wolf Printing Company in Hartford, Connecticut. Eventually, the business was moved to the Elmwood section of West Hartford, where George's two sons, George Jr. and Brad, took over the day-to-day operations of the growing printing company. In 1982, the brothers decided to divide the company into two separate firms, with George concentrating on commercial sheetfed printing and Brad focusing on stationery packages and business forms.
George Wolf Jr. constructed a new 13,000 square foot facility at the current location on Holmes Road in nearby Newington and called his company Wolf Color Graphics. The company built its business primarily on 4-color process sell sheets with its stable of three 4-color GTO presses. George continued to run this business until 1988, when he sold his company to Jack Meier, an entrepreneur from the corporate marketing world. Jack's vision was to make Wolf into a premier sheetfed printer in the greater Hartford area.
With a new owner came a new name, and in 1989 Wolf ColorPrint was born. The focus became more than sell sheets and expanded to catalogs, poster prints and annual reports. In 1992, Wolf purchased its first 4-color 28" press. In 1995, more space was needed, and the factory building was nearly doubled in size to 20,000 square feet, thus making room for the purchase of a new 6-color (plus aqueous coating tower) Heidelberg press and complete, in-house bindery. Two years later, as the company grew and drastically needed additional space, the 16,000 square foot building at 91 Holmes Road, directly adjacent to the plant, was acquired and soon filled with sales, management, finance, estimating, and customer service personnel.
In 1997, Wolf ColorPrint entered the 40" market with the addition of a 6-color and two 2-color 40" presses. By 1999, the conversion to a full digital front-end and the addition of another high-speed, 4-color 40" press added to the company's ability to turn jobs around on schedules demanded by its customers. It has been more than 70 years since Mr. Wolf first opened his doors to what is now Wolf ColorPrint, and today we a have a state-of-the-art, full service printing facility in the Holmes Industrial Park in Newington CT. |
